Yup. That's the one. Xu Xian is played by a woman, who also plays Xu Xians' son later in the series. Sounds dicey, I know, but I think they got away with it - even in the scenes where they meet. Anyway, a little 'suspension of disbelief' goes a long way. Thanks for the Youku.com tip!

As much as I try to avoid Chinese soaps, I think I've actually seen this show. It sparked my interest because I had recently visited Hangzhou, and the stone bridge at the north end of the lake factors into the legend.

Great review, and welcome to Lost Laowai Jalal. You write better than any other hamster we've ever had contribute here!

Incidentally, I believe Youku.com is the best place to find the show for anyone interested in watching. With the number of "re-imaginings" of stories on Chinese TV, I can't be certain, but believe this is it. It's the one where Xu Xian is played by a woman, right?
