I’ve often seen images of the Yunnan rice terraces, but they’ve all shown them as a lush-layered green. This is the first time I’ve seen them at harvest time, bringing to mind the cornucopia of colours that decorate the countryside of my home country, Canada, at this time of year. Taken by Jaune d’eau at the Kunshan Beerfest this September. I just love this photo - for the lighting, for the unique subject, for the expressions in the crowd - and for the fact that it has this very reminiscent revolutionary feel to it; sort of a Great Leap Forward meets drunken carnival. I had intended to go to this beer festival, I now regret missing it.

Only two days until the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics and with all the cynicism floating around - we here at Lost Laowai needed a little somethin’ somethin’ to … ahem… raise our Olympic spirits. The problem is, the local people say the Chinese name (Duo Mei Li - meaning ‘how beautiful’) doesn’t really make sense to them either. They thought it was a bad translation from the English name. So it looks like everyone is confused including DO & ME.”

It’s the close of a week that will go into China’s history as one of the toughest and most harrowing. And though the rescue operations are still underway and the rebuilding is just beginning, with all the horrific images I’ve been exposed to this week, I wanted to post a photo of the week that was a bit light-hearted.
