China Photo: Yuanyang Harvest
I’ve often seen images of the Yunnan rice terraces, but they’ve all shown them as a lush-layered green. This is the first time I’ve seen them at harvest time, bringing to mind the cornucopia of colours that decorate the countryside of my home country, Canada, at this time of year. Be sure to check out photographer Benjamin Kong’s amazing collection of stunning photos.

China Photo: Kaifeng Street
The comments on this photo’s flickr page say it all - “classic China”. As the warm weather is quickly becoming a memory, I wanted to slip this image, by Elephant on a Bicycle, in here before we bundle up and don our long undies for winter.

China Photo: Hammer to Fall
Taken by Jaune d’eau at the Kunshan Beerfest this September. I just love this photo - for the lighting, for the unique subject, for the expressions in the crowd - and for the fact that it has this very reminiscent revolutionary feel to it; sort of a Great Leap Forward meets drunken carnival. I had intended to go to this beer festival, I now regret missing it.

China Photo: People of the Island
I don’t usually pick the newest submission to the Lost Laowai Flickr Group as the photo of the week, as there’s always a backlog of great photos I like to pull from - however I couldn’t resist this stunning shot of a small inhabited island in Hunan by Douglas M. Paine/Alphafish

China Photo: Chinese Olympic Cheerleaders
Only two days until the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics and with all the cynicism floating around - we here at Lost Laowai needed a little somethin’ somethin’ to … ahem… raise our Olympic spirits. Thanks to ChineseTools.eu for helping us out. Observant readers will remember we featured these girls previously as well.

China Photo: Daily Gongfu
There are a few things that no matter how long I’m in China will always bring a pleasant smile to my face - the elderly practicing taiqi, dancing or just walking backwards in parks is one of them. The above photo is by Shanghai-based photographer Stephane Ferrero.

China Photo: Do & Me
Some humorous Chinglish from Life in Nanning (blog). In the photographer’s own words: “A Fast Food Chain in Nanning has a strange English translation. The problem is, the local people say the Chinese name (Duo Mei Li - meaning ‘how beautiful’) doesn’t really make sense to them either. They thought it was a bad translation from the English name. So it looks like everyone is confused including DO & ME.”

China Photo: A Beautiful Landscape
This great photo by photographer Jaune d’eau is the perfect visual pairing for the news this week that China has overtaken the US as the world’s leading producer of climate-warming gasses.

China Photo: The Stare
In the words of the photographer: This motorcycle taxi man was intently giving me the look, as we foreigners often refer to the intense stares we inevitably receive here. This fellow was more bold than most, continuing his gaze even after I raised the camera (that usually stops the staring).

China Photo: Life's a Beach
It’s the close of a week that will go into China’s history as one of the toughest and most harrowing. And though the rescue operations are still underway and the rebuilding is just beginning, with all the horrific images I’ve been exposed to this week, I wanted to post a photo of the week that was a bit light-hearted. This week’s photo is by flickr user Life in Nanning, be sure to check out his full portfolio.
