Good to hear from you, Dezza... did I tell you I'm living in Beijing now? A job at China Daily HK sounds awesome... like being the Seoul reporter for some North Korean rag. Party time!

Dezza,

Yeah, you know it, that's a good memory.

Dalian (Rick? Chris? Alex?) - How much do they pay for such articles?

To be fair, I know there is some stellar journalism (Southern Metropolis Newspaper group comes to mind) being done in China but it is always a constant battle between their editors and the cronies at the propaganda department. Having said that, I have no respect for Chinese government mouthpiece newspapers such as the People's Daily and China Daily which have some of the lowest circulation numbers in China (according Mick and my sources inside the Chinese media). Hell, the Chinese citizens themselves don't' even read the People's Daily...

Odd.

Doing interviews in Dalian I've noticed that it is easy to place a story with a paper. No research for the journalist, essentially a story on a plate, if it agrees with their central editorial at the time. Nice simple work with them.

And that is essentially the problem, no investigative journalism, just a lot of feelers and if someone bites it is a story. Similar to your case perhaps and really not that odd at all. Especially the hostile response, doing you a favor and doing them a favor, right, because that's what mainland media is. Hillbilly economics.

I did a stint as an English polisher at China Daily in Beijing. The HK office was viewed as a joke, but a nice cushy number (and an attractive posting) for those of us fed up with the grim Beijing winters.
Readership figures for CD were a tightly guarded secret, not doubt because they are so small. Nobody buys it - work units and tourism facilities are required to distribute it.
I only lasted three months at CD, it was so dull. Interestingly, those who stayed longer became quite defensive about the publication. Maybe the Canadian is one of them.
