God does this never end lol. I was there back in 2004 and it sounds like nothing has changed at all. Still, you got to give it to them, their verve and veracity, the fact they're still attempting to do something about the flow of absolute filth that is the internet in 2009 (being honest) rather than just saying hey ho let's go with that flow and giving up. You got to admit, when a google search for the word "boy" gives mostly gay porn results, as it does here on google.com.au something is probably a little awry.
Still, I will survive I'm sure with a few dodgy pix thrown into the mix. I'd rather have the freedom over the filtering anyday.

Yeah, this Green Dam thing is just silly, using it to block searches to the Falun Gong sites too. So ridiculous! Falun Gong happens to uphold truthfulness compassion and tolerance. You guys are totally welcome to check out my blog http://www.freedomforchina.blogspot.om,
basically got rock, indie, hip hop and spoken word music made in aid of highlighting the persecution of Falun Gong by the non-hostile international community who want to offer their concern! follow us at the blog for updates too, cheers and God Bless. Zub.

@Oli - Chinasmack & other netizens have done a good job of finding out two anomalies: the CCTV interview of a random young person where the young man turned out to be a CCTV employee; and the huge spike in Google searches for weird terms (such as the 'son and mother' thing) that shows that some researchers at CCTV clearly spent the day seeking out offensive terms with which to nail Google.

Good news is that Green Dam as been delayed, with no new deadline given. But it has not been scrapped. The overloaded 'Great Firewall' needs help from PC-side monitoring, which is what Green Dam would do where it is actually installed.

The battle begins again in a few months, I guess, when Green Dam will start to ship with new (Windows) computers in China.

Re: suggestive search (sic), I read that far from being 'caught red handed', the search results for 'son' were manipulated to contain those 'son and mother incest' terms. See http://www.chinasmack.com/more/cctv-attacks-google-porn-links-fake-interview-exposed/ for a little more info.

ShaoDu, I downloaded Green Dam and installed it on my box, and I was able to access Tiananmen Mothers, Falun Gong, Student for Free Tibet, and Pamela Anderson.

Ryan the U of Mich. test report stated they tested the uninstall and it works. I also able to uninstall it. Default password of 112233 breifly mentioned during installation could cause people not able to log into maintainance tab, where uninstall option is.

But I was unable to reproduce the buffer overflow crash the U of Mich. test claimed. I suspect they had conventional safeguards (AV, firewall) disabled, which IMHO isn't a valid test. Green Dam is a content filter not meant to replace these conventional safeguards.

Without firewall and antivirus, Windows itself is vulnerable to exploit.
