As far as integration goes, my first year was in a small town called Luoyang (one of China's ancient capitals), now with population of 6 million and only 6 foreigners living there, all of whom went home for Christmas for a month. So I had no choice to integrate and learn the language quickly. Trial by fire, so to speak! @Ryan: Not lazy at all! Look at your site and network -- impressive indeed.
