Photo: Morning Exercises

Morning Exercise, Dalian
This photo reminded me of a video blog I did back a few years ago. An intriguing shot. Explains Eric Hevesy, the photographer, “This photo was taken with a telephoto lens looking out of my teaching dormitory at my university in Dalian. I used vignette to kind of highlight towards the center of the photo.”

Lost Laowai blogger Matt Muller is traveling around Kunming and working his way south to Laos for the Golden Week (smart guy getting out of China for the week). He grabbed this shot in Kunming. From Matt: “It is a random ‘lingerie show’ showcased by a Chinese model on a side street in Kunming and away from the touristic center. The clientele seems to consist solely of taxi drivers and other men taking a rest break during the pre-lunch rush hour. This is one of many I snapped, but the most interesting one: Note the old lady with the hump back on right side of pic. Is she the model’s delighted and proud grandmother?”

This sculpture by Zheng Lu at New Age Gallery is described by the photographer, Flickr user NowJustNic, as such: “This large Buddha head (well over a metre tall) is made out of traditional Chinese characters in chrome, which give it a delicate, ethereal feel, different to the monumental stone or wood statues of Buddha you usually see in temples or grottoes. It’s one of my favourite finds at 798 so far (though it’s gone now). My friend Eric said he would stand it at the end of his bed and put a light inside it :-) .”

Photo of the Week: Hammer To Fall

China Photo: Hammer to Fall
Taken by Jaune d’eau at the Kunshan Beerfest this September. I just love this photo – for the lighting, for the unique subject, for the expressions in the crowd – and for the fact that it has this very reminiscent revolutionary feel to it; sort of a Great Leap Forward meets drunken carnival. I had intended to go to this beer festival, I now regret missing it.

Photo of the Week: Do & Me

China Photo: Do & Me
Some humorous Chinglish from Life in Nanning (blog). In the photographer’s own words: “A Fast Food Chain in Nanning has a strange English translation. The problem is, the local people say the Chinese name (Duo Mei Li – meaning ‘how beautiful’) doesn’t really make sense to them either. They thought it was a bad translation from the English name. So it looks like everyone is confused including DO & ME.”

Photo of the Week: Life’s a Beach

It’s the close of a week that will go into China’s history as one of the toughest and most harrowing. And though the rescue operations are still underway and the rebuilding is just beginning, with all the horrific images I’ve been exposed to this week, I wanted to post a photo of the week that [...]
