7 More Slightly Off the Beaten Path Locations in China

Want to travel this October, but can’t afford to go to Thailand?  Don’t want to visit Guilin or Hong Kong again?  Well then this post is for you!

A little over a year ago I wrote a post detailing Pingyao, Xiahe, Tongren, Macau, Louyang, Emei Shan, Chongqing, Kashgar, Turpan, and Xishuangbanna as ten places to go to escape the Laowai tourist trail. Today, I’m going to add seven more locations to that list.

Lost Laowai blogger Matt Muller is traveling around Kunming and working his way south to Laos for the Golden Week (smart guy getting out of China for the week). He grabbed this shot in Kunming. From Matt: “It is a random ‘lingerie show’ showcased by a Chinese model on a side street in Kunming and away from the touristic center. The clientele seems to consist solely of taxi drivers and other men taking a rest break during the pre-lunch rush hour. This is one of many I snapped, but the most interesting one: Note the old lady with the hump back on right side of pic. Is she the model’s delighted and proud grandmother?”

I’ve often seen images of the Yunnan rice terraces, but they’ve all shown them as a lush-layered green. This is the first time I’ve seen them at harvest time, bringing to mind the cornucopia of colours that decorate the countryside of my home country, Canada, at this time of year. Be sure to check out photographer Benjamin Kong‘s amazing collection of stunning photos.
