China Earthquake - How you can help

On Monday May 12, 2008, at just before 3pm, a 7.8 earthquake struck in Wenchuan county, just north west of Chengdu, in China's most populated province, Sichuan. The quake has left many thousands dead and many, many, many more injured and homeless. Without immediate assistance the lives lost in the initial tragic disaster will be dwarfed by the number that can potentially be saved if we all pitch in and help a little.

Please, if you're able, use the following information to help in any way you can.

Sichuan Quake Relief

Sichuan Quake Relief

Sichuan Quake Relief is a non-profit, humanitarian organization, coordinating small-scale projects to improve the lives of people affected by the May 12th, 2008, 7.9 magnitude earthquake. Sichuan Quake Relief identifies the specific needs of remote communities that may not receive immediate assistance, sends out appeals, collects funds and supplies, and coordinates their delivery. Administrative costs are nil.

Jet Li's One Foundation

Another way to donate is through Jet Li's One Foundation. The site is all in Chinese, but you can get at a Google translated version here. The site has options to pay by various online methods (including PayPal) with all proceeds going to the Red Cross Society of China.

China Mobile - donate through SMS

China Mobile has set up an earthquake relief fund. To donate via your mobile phone, simply send a text message to the telephone number ‘10699988’, writing the number amount you would like to donate (from 1RMB to 30RMB) in the body of the text. The money will be deducted from your phone bill or prepaid card.

A whole bunch of other ways

If none of these donation methods suit your particular situation, definitely check out CNReviews' China Earthquake Donation Guide. Elliot Ng has created a continually updated list of ways you can donate. Be sure to check it out.

Instructions

You can just copy and paste that code directly into your site’s sidebar, or where ever. The graphic is on our servers here, but you are welcome to download it (right-click, save image as…) and re-upload it to your servers if you wish.

Also, please note that the link, by default, will direct people to this page here on Lost Laowai. We’ve done this for two reasons, 1. We can update it with the latest information (and alternative donation methods), and 2. the Red Cross Society of China’s site was working intermittently at best (3 of 5 times we accessed it, it wouldn’t load).

You are, of course, welcome to change the link to link directly to the Red Cross’ information about quake relief, or their donation page. The links are:

If you know of any additional ways in which help can be offered to the people of Sichuan, please contact us and we will include it here.

h/t to the fine folks at ChinesePod for initially making this information available.
