What are the historic, economic, social, cultural factors that led to China's population being so massive?

Because in China, as a Woman the greatest achievement you can accomplish as a Woman, is to be Married by 26 and have a child by 26...I can think of few other countries, if any, where your success as a person is based on having a child and being married...but it China...this is part of the culture.
