10 days only? And then she will fly back? Forget it, it is not necessary to do the registration at the local police station. Save yourself the trouble. Noone will ask her/you for it. If you feel that you have to do it (trust me you don't need it) then just head over to the police station of your district. It is very easy. See also Dikran's answer.

It's you and your luck Barton,
They might or might nor get caught....

10 days goes fast but if they're caught, that might spoil their vacation Sad

I've had a handful of visitors visit me and I've never registered them. One of the previous answers is right though, it's very very likely it will never be a problem... until it is.

The way I gauge it though is I simply ask myself how many times I've been asked to present my passport or any sort of registration. Other than the yearly door-to-door laowai check by the local police office, in 5 years it's never happened. Odds are hugely in your favour it will not be a problem.

I was a visitor on a tourist visa for a while... didn't register. I was there for a month. Nothing happened. No one looked at me twice (if partly because no one looked away/stopped staring).
Save yourself the trouble. Don't do it. Feels good, man.

Yes they have 24 hours to register at the nearest police station where you live.

You need to take with you the contract of your house, if it is rented under your name as well as your own documents proving that you reside in China.

P.S. Even though my wife is Chinese and I do register as well.

Hey all, thanks for your answers. i known their is not so much checking on foreigners as i now staying 8 months in china , the only checking was when returning back to shanghai from a company trip outside shanghai. But what would happen if my relative stay 1 week in my appartment in shanghai(not going to police) than one week to bejing (in hotel).
i noticed chinese are very good with computer, will no one ask her questions when leaving the country?
