What’s with the Chinese aversion to scheduling?

When I started at a four-year college in 1998, I didn't think it the least little bit odd that the schedule included in my orientation package already had the date of my graduation ceremony listed. Considering that family and friends would be traveling from out of town and would need to plan in advance, this made perfect sense to me. Why would it be any other way?

Fast forward to late September of 2002 and I was…

Hot Lasagna? You can’t handle the hot lasagna!

Ah, it's Laowai Crackdown season again. Time to cringe as we watch the latest laowai misbehavior on viral video and self-righteously point out that we would never ever think of acting like that. Time to feel a bit indignant about getting stopped and asked for our passports outside the bar because he didn't stop anybody who looked Chinese even though there were some ABC's in the group and that's basically racial profi…

Video: 2011 Year of the Rabbit

So, it's a little late and most of us have begrudgingly returned to work, but 新年快乐 fellow laowai.

I captured my own thoughts, photos and videos of my 6th Chinese New Year's Eve on my blog, and so won't waste space with a reiteration here.

However, I wanted to share this great short video by Jonah M. Kessel, Paul Morris and Kit Gillet:

Chun Jie: The Next Generation

I really like Spring Festival. Honestly. Every year I hear the arguments about the "crazy Chinese and their crazy fireworks", but despite the noise (and limb-losing danger) I have to admit that I get a bit caught up in the season.

I suppose I've not been here long enough yet to truly understand what that holiday feeling is, certainly not to the extent my wife and her compatriots do. Being home for the Christmas se…

2010: The Year China Makes Contact?

Happy New Year from everyone here at Lost Laowai. Another year over and a new one just begun. Here's to hoping that 2010 reverses what has been a terrible year for Internet openness in China.

My New Year's Resolution is to spend eight minutes each day sending positive mental messages to the switch flickers in Beijing in hopes that they will grant validity to what Zhou Xisheng, Deputy Chief and Director-General…

Happy New Year Laowai!

A quick note to wish everyone a very happy new year! With the tragedy, controversy and craziness of China's 2008 now behind us, 2009 is bound to be tame by comparison. Somehow, however, I suspect this crazy country us laowai call home is bound to find ways to keep things interesting and you can be sure that Lost Laowai will be there to sigh and shake our heads at it all.

We've also got some interesting things plan…

Photo of the Week: Life’s a Beach

It's the close of a week that will go into China's history as one of the toughest and most harrowing. And though the rescue operations are still underway and the rebuilding is just beginning, with all the horrific images I've been exposed to this week, I wanted to post a photo of the week that was a bit light-hearted. This week's photo is by flickr user Life in Nanning, be sure to check out his full portfolio.
Eve…
