Laowai lockout of Tibet

Chinese authorities have stopped the issuance of permits for foreign travel to Tibet due to chilly weather and over-crowding. Probably has nothing to do with this.

People's Daily: The temporary measures on restricting foreign tourists to Tibet were mainly due to the current cold winter weather, limited accommodation capacity and safety concerns, a high-ranking official said on Monday.

The plateau region is stil…

YouTube Blocked Ahead of Tibetan Anniversary

It seems some time since I've blogged about a major site being blocked in China, but with the National People's Congress in full-swing and the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising less than a week away - it appears the Net Nanny has quashed access to the world's largest video sharing site, YouTube.

Rick Martin, for Inventor Spot, had this to say:
This block appears to be purely preemptive, and a quick search …

No Oasis for China! Chinese heard to say, “who?”

You may have heard that the planned Oasis shows in Beijing and Shanghai next month have been canceled. Apparently 12 years isn't enough time to separate a musician and his ties to a certain autonomous region's freedom concert.

Though no "official" reason has been given for the cancellation, the concert's promoters said it was due to the government discovery that Noel Gallagher played the Free [*tib*] benefit conce…

Protesters play secret agents

If ever an argument needed to be made for watching less TV, the groups of Western "Free Tibet" protesters that have snuck in to China are it.

There's a four-page article running on the Washington Post's site which explains in detail the mission of a group funded by Students for a Free Tibet (cue Mission Impossible music - or that 24 countdown tone).

I mean, I respect that these folks want to stand up for a caus…

Chinese netizens strike blow at Western media ethics

Chinese citizens and netizens alike have long claimed Western media shows an unfair bias towards their country, and though most Western media outlets seem to pay it no heed, one site has caused them to pause and take notice.

Anti-CNN.com, as its name suggest, puts a thumb in the eye of US media giant CNN, but doesn't stop there. The site gives an endless supply of photographic examples where North American and Eur…

Beijing, Dalai Lama reconcile

Rather shocking news as reported by Xinhaha earlier today:
BEIJING, March 31 (Xinhaha) -- After allegations by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao earlier this month that the Dalai Lama and his supporters were directly responsible for the recent violent insurgence in Lhasa and other parts of Tibet, a surprise announcement was made Tuesday that the Dalai Lama had met with Chinese President Hu Jintao in an effort to reconcile …

A fabricated frolic into folly

There are few things I love more than photography, Photoshop and good Chinese controversy. Imagine my delight then when I stumbled across a WSJ article, "China Eats Crow Over Faked Photo Of Rare Antelope", that melds the three.

In what has become this month's journalistic black-eye (in a LONG line of similar cuts and bruises) for China, it's been discovered that a photo of the rare Tibetan antelope (or Chiru) casu…
