The Hao Hao Report: The best China news and blog posts as chosen by youLost Laowai’s sister site, the Hao Hao Report, hit a rather remarkable (to me at least) milestone today — 10,000 submitted articles. For a site that depends entirely on member-submitted content, I find that fan-frigin-tastic.

It truly would not have been possible without the amazing dedication of its motley membership, and so before I go into the rest of the post, let me use this small soapbox opportunity to first and foremost give a huge thanks to them.

For anyone unaware of what the heck the Hao Hao Report is: “The Hao Hao Report (HHR) is a way to quickly see what the most popular English language articles regarding China are. The HHR accepts blog posts, major news articles, and basically anything about China.” Basically, anyone can join up and submit a URL and a bit of a description and let the community vote on whether its worth reading or not — good articles get promoted to the front page and the crap fades into the ether.

I started Hao Hao Report back in June of 2006 as a feature of the then nkotb Lost Laowai. HHR quickly grew into its own little animal and after about 6 months I decided to move it to its own domain to help it develop its own identity and community.

The HHR membership has steadily grown to the point where we have just under a thousand users with about 200 of them dubbed “Hao Hao Reporters” — meaning, users that through activity on the site have proven to be valuable members of the community. Primary purpose of the site aside (discovery of good China-related articles), one of the best parts about the Hao Hao Report is its tight, friendly and inclusive community. And while I’ve loved seeing the user count grow over the years, it’s really a core group of dedicated members who have really helped push HHR to the 10,000 submissions mark.

So anyway, 10K, cool.

If you’ve never checked out the Hao Hao Report, be sure to go over and give it a whirl, we’d love to have you as part of the community. And if you’ve not been in a while, no time like the present to make your grand return.

  1. congrats on that, Ryan. I’ve quit using Digg, because it’s so biased and stilted, but I still enjoy using HHR & get a lot out of it. When you have time, have you thought of creating Firefox and/or Chrome extensions for super-fast story submission (if that’s even useful)?

  2. Thanks guys.

@Steven: I had at one point thought about creating a Firefox extension (at the time Chrome didn’t have any sort of plugin ability) but it sort of fell off the todo.

You sparked my interest though and I sat down and coded up an HHR Firefox Extension last night. If you wouldn’t mind helping me beta test it (and anyone else reading this of course), I’d be ever so grateful.

Other than my Mac and PC, it’s largely untested, so any feedback would be great.

Chrome version to follow (assuming I can figure out how to create it). EDIT: Chrome version now available too.

  3. Wow. You guys are amazing. Great job! It’s quite the record huge Chinese progress and development over time. I bet if you went back and checked out what your views were 9,999 posts ago it sure has changed. Well, we hope so 😉

    Good job!!

    Mike, Shanghai
